Filling in the Testing Gaps on Auxiliary Equipment (Equipment and Reliability)

Presented by Josh Vareberg, TRC

Large substation equipment relies on attached ancillary devices for its own protection, monitoring and longevity. Something as critical as a sudden pressure device that intervenes at a transmission level to protect expensive liquid filled equipment or a small heating element that reduces moisture and corrosion each deserve attention and proving during commissioning and maintenance. This presentation will address common industry practice testing by the book on these devices as well as non standard testing where no equipment is available. It will also challenge field technicians to test deeper than just jumpering contacts on these devices. Specific cases include the testing of heater thermostats by forcing temperature down on the device, sudden pressure testing by 'bicycle pump' vs industry specific test sets, and full scheme functional testing vs multistep component and wire checks.
