Abstract: Industry has been implementing the requirements of NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace for over 20 years. NFPA 70E has changed substantially since it first published in 1979. The 2024 Edition published in the fall of 2023 continues in its refinement of electrical hazard classification and electrical hazard identification and risk assessment (e.g. EHIRA). NFPA 70E is also aligned with other Standards and specifically with respect to the mandatory requirements in Article 110.5 Electrical Safety Program, that an employer shall develop and implement an Electrical Safety Program, ANSI Z10 or ISO 45001 should be referenced. The employer’s Electrical Safety Program is required to document a “risk assessment procedure.” Has your company developed a compliant Electrical Safety Program, and trained your employees on the Electrical Safety Program and its policies, practices, processes and procedural requirements? Did you implement the required risk assessment procedure and what risk control methods have been implemented? Have you audited your Electrical Safety Program and the risk control methods it identifies? As a Qualified Person how do you personally know that when you execute authorized and approved energized electrical work tasks that your personal risk is managed to as low as reasonably practicable? Do you understand and can identify the electrical hazards related to assigned work tasks? Have you been provided appropriate risk control methods, and do you apply them in the field? Do you understand the risk control methods required to be applied to achieve an acceptable residual risk level? Are you effectively managing likelihood of occurrence? Do you know your residual risk?
