Description: As the facility electrical engineer at a large automotive assembly plant for twenty-five years, I oversaw the design and installation of new electrical distribution equipment for many projects. If only I had known then what I know now… I would have done some things differently in the early design stages. If only I had known some of the techniques for arc-flash mitigation… I would have incorporated them in the initial design instead of having to retrofit the equipment later. This paper discusses five different techniques readily available today for reducing the arc-flash hazard on typical industrial power distribution equipment. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique will be reviewed along with a discussion of the challenges associated with retrofitting existing equipment versus installing new.
