Introduced more than 80 years ago, the exciting current and loss test continues to be a consistent component for any comprehensive transformer commissioning and/or routine test program. Over that time our understanding of the measurement, specifically the various influences on the measurement, have improved significantly. In addition, the test initially was performed primarily on medium to large power transformers, whereas now the test is performed on a variety of transformers over a wide range of ratings, configurations, and applications. And yet with all these changes in understanding and application, the analysis of the results has essentially remained relatively unchanged. This discussion will focus on providing a better understanding of the influences on the test measurement, to remove confusion and provide for simple, straight-forward analysis techniques in the field.
