Grounding Gotchas: Soil Resistivity and Fall of Potential Testing Gone Wrong

Presented by Lee Howard - Hood Patterson & Dewar

IEEE Standard 81-2012: Guide for Measuring Earth Resistivity, Ground Impedance, and Earth Surface Potentials of a Grounding System provides guidance on numerous types of grounding testing. As with many standards, it can be a challenge to understand the intent, the methods, and the implementation of the prescribed testing. Unfortunately, many perform soil resistivity and fall of potential testing incorrectly and obtain invalid results. As this testing data is frequently used for ground grid design (soil resistivity) and grounding grid commissioning (fall of potential), it is imperative to acquire valid data. In this presentation, we will discuss case studies and test reports showing common testing mistakes and how to correct these testing pitfalls to create a successful outcome.
