Using LIRA to Facilitate Effective Repair of a Nuclear Power Cable (Cables)

Derek Jacobsen - EA Technology LLC

Line Impedance Resonance Analysis (LIRA) is a powerful and non-destructive testing technique that was developed to locate defects in electrical cables. Originally created for use in nuclear plants to determine the effect of radiation degradation in cables, the technique has since been commercialized for use in other industries. The value behind this technology is that it is a low- voltage (5 V) and fast (10 minutes) electrical test that can locate faults very closely and works over super long cables. This presentation will discuss the results of a LIRA project that was commissioned to locate a suspected fault in a feeder cable of a North American nuclear generation plant. The theory behind LIRA testing as well as practical testing methodology are also covered.
