In this preview of our Protection Fundamentals: A Basic Relay Lab seminar, we will cover the general steps you should take when creating or reviewing a microprocessor relay settings file. Industrial sites and smaller utilities might not have standardized protection applications for all their equipment and rely heavily on customized relay designs when installing new protection. While each design might be different, the approach to setting design can be standardized. The topics covered will go beyond just verifying the enabled protection will trip a breaker and will address many common settings file pitfalls. This approach to settings file creation is intended to reduce design errors, minimize troubleshooting in the field, help the end customer easily interface with the relay’s front panel, and ensure the relay records valuable data for post fault event analysis. While this process can be applied to any make or model of microprocessor relay, this seminar will step through real world examples using settings files from select major relay manufacturers.
