Once an obscure technology, infrared thermography has become a common test technique for inspecting operating electrical systems and equipment. Although today’s thermal imaging equipment is relatively easy to use, performing an accurate infrared inspection is more than simply ‘pointing and shooting’ a thermal imager. Contractors who properly position and promote their infrared inspection activities can enjoy considerable profits despite the proliferation of low cost thermal imagers. Ensuring success requires a trained operator, the correct equipment, and knowledge of temperature limits for inspected equipment.
